Nabel has been the president of Brigham & Women's Hospital and professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School since 2010.

Prior to that, Nabel held a variety of roles at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute from 1999 to 2009, including as Director. Nabel is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
