McBrearty is chair of SEMAFO’s Environmental, Health & Safety and Sustainable Development Committee and a member of the Human Resources and Corporate Governance Committee. His business experience includes a more than 40-year career with the United Steelworkers of America, the largest industrial labour union in North America. McBrearty began his tenure in 1974 as a staff representative, subsequently holding positions of increasing responsibility that culminated in his election as National Director for Canada in 1994. McBrearty has been a labour relations consultant since his retirement in 2004. In addition to holding a social sciences degree from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM),

McBrearty received a PhD Honoris Causa from Université du Québec in 2003.
