Dr. Rosalind Grymes received her doctorate in Cancer Biology from Stanford University School of Medicine. She began her career at NASA as a research scientist. Her first foray into management and science policy was undertaken as the Program Manager for Space Life Sciences Outreach, a position from which she directed education and public outreach for NASA Life Sciences missions at three NASA field centers from 1994-2000.Recruited to the NASA Astrobiology Institute in 1997, she developed the infrastructure and collaborative models of the Institute and managed this effort over its first decade, becoming its Executive Director. In this role, Rose was also responsible for creating and leading the NAI’s International Partners program and establishing the first international network of astrobiology organizations. She was a founder and the first elected Honorary Lifetime Member of the Astrobiology Society.In 2006, Dr. Grymes was ‘loaned’ by NASA to the University of California, Santa Cruz as the Director of the Advanced Studies Laboratories, a partnership combining these two science and engineering powerhouses, one federal- (NASA Ames) and one state-based (UCSC). ASL grew to maturity under her leadership, with 13 research teams participating from academic, federal, and international non-profit and commercial organizations. For her entrepreneurial accomplishments and the initiation of innovative science projects, NASA awarded her the agency’s Outstanding Leadership Medal.Rose briefly served as Associate Director of the Institute on Science for Global Policy, producing that organization’s study plan for Energy Sustainability. She now concentrates on sustainability initiatives at NASA Ames and recently completed a fellowship with the General Services Administration in Sustainability. In her role as Special Assistant to the Associate Director for Research and Technology, Rose leads Sustainability Partnerships.
